Japan Customs guide to Consumption Tax Exemption

  1. Begin by contacting a Customs Broker as well as a Freight Forwarder to learn about the process and to get advice on how to transport your equipment from our location.
  2. Buy the equipment that you need at the Ritchie Bros. auction.
  3. Hire a Freight Forwarder and Customs Broker from the recommended list below for all your transportation needs.
  4. Provide Ritchie Bros. with export information as well as the names of the companies that will be taking care of transporting your equipment.
  5. Please provide to Ritchie Bros. auction site the original export documents including
       • Bill of Lading-must specify lot numbers and serial numbers
       • Export Certificate of Customs
    All export documents must state Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers as the shipper of record for tax exemption.

Please take note that once the equipment is sold on auction day, it is the responsibility of the buyer and no longer of Ritchie Bros.

Important visa information for Chinese citizens traveling to Japan

To obtain a Japanese visa for the purpose of attending Ritchie Bros Auctioneers Auctions, you will have to apply for the visa yourself. Ritchie Bros Auctioneers will help you obtain the required invitation documents from our sister company in Japan. Once you receive those documents, you will have to contact the Japanese Embassy in China and take our documents, along with other documents required by the Japanese Embassy in China, and follow the instructions for applying for a visa. In Ritchie Bros Auctioneers Beijing office to provide you with the documents from our sister company in Japan(which are in Japanese language), we will need you to provide the following information:

  • Passport Copy (Please scan and send to us by email the information page of your valid passport)
  • Flight Schedule (Departure and Arrival Airports and Times, Flight # for each leg of the trip. In Chinese and English)
  • Daily Schedule while in Japan (What he plans to do each day he is in Japan - For example: Day 1, arrive at Airport, go to Hotel. Day 2, Attend RBA auction, Day 3, go to Airport and return to China. Ritchie Bros Auctioneers Japan is your sponsor while in Japan so your activities in Japan have to be limited to doing business with RBA. Daily Schedule should be provided in Chinese and English)
  • Hotel Schedule - (He needs to provide us with details of what hotel he will be staying at each evening. Hotel Name, Address and Telephone Number. Provided in Chinese (if available), English and Japanese if possible)
  • Your Complete Company Name (In Chinese and English)
  • Your position/title in the company (In Chinese and English)
  • Applicants full mailing address and contact details and Email (In Chinese and English. Mailing address cannot be a PO Box because we need to send the original documents to him. It must also include a contact phone number and email).

Once you have this information, you need to send it to Ritchie Bros Auctioneers Beijing office. After we have reviewed it and find it acceptable, we will forward it to our sister company in Japan for processing. Ritchie Bros Auctioneers Japan will produce the documents required from RBA KK (Invitation Letter, Itinerary of applicant, Guarantee Letter, and copy of the RBA KK Business Registration). She will then scan these and send them in soft copy to applicant and will follow up by sending the originals by FEDEX directly to the customer.
